Your car failed an emissions test and now you’re stuck deciding whether to pour money into repairs or give up. You do not have to fix it to donate. In Orlando, a failed smog or emissions test does not disqualify your vehicle from donation through Orlando Auto Ally. We partner with Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) charity, to accept vehicles in almost any condition—running or not, including cars that can’t pass emissions.
Here’s what actually happens in Florida: when you donate, you’re making a charitable gift and transferring title to a nonprofit, not doing a private buyer-to-buyer sale. The smog and emissions rules that usually apply when selling a car to another person typically do not apply to charitable donations. Heritage for the Blind sells your vehicle as‑is at auction or to a buyer who understands it failed emissions and is prepared to repair it. You don’t pay for diagnostics, you don’t chase a retest, and you don’t need a current inspection. From College Park and Conway to Winter Park, Kissimmee, and Altamonte Springs, we’ll schedule free towing, handle the paperwork, and send you a tax receipt you can use when you file your federal return.
How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Tell us about your emissions-fail vehicle
Start online or by phone and share the basics: year, make, model, and that it failed smog or emissions. Whether you’re in downtown Orlando, East Colonial, Winter Garden, or Oviedo, we’ll confirm it’s eligible—which it almost always is—and explain what paperwork you’ll need for a smooth donation.
2. Relax—no emissions repair or retest needed
We clearly note that the car failed emissions and accept it as‑is for Heritage for the Blind. You do not need to spend money chasing a check-engine light, new catalytic converter, or another inspection. The charity’s buyer or auction handles any needed repairs after title transfer.
3. Schedule free pickup anywhere in Orlando Metro
We arrange a free tow at a time that works for you—home, work, or the shop. From Lake Nona and Baldwin Park to Sanford, Clermont, and Kissimmee, our towing partners pick up your car at no cost. You hand over the signed title and keys; they handle loading and transport.
4. We transfer title and sell the car as‑is
Once the tow company has your signed Florida title, Heritage for the Blind completes the title transfer and sells the vehicle as‑is. The buyer knows it failed emissions and takes responsibility for repairs. You’re no longer liable for the car or its emission status after transfer.
5. Receive your tax receipt from Heritage for the Blind
After the vehicle is picked up, Heritage for the Blind sends you a tax receipt. Most donors can deduct at least up to $500; if it sells for more, you may use the actual sale price with IRS Form 1098‑C. Keep this with your records for your federal income tax filing.
6. Feel good about clearing space and helping locally
You’re free from an emissions headache, you’ve opened up driveway or garage space, and you’ve supported services for people who are blind or visually impaired. All from right here in the Orlando Metro, without repair bills or inspection hassles hanging over you.
Potential complications to watch for
Missing or incorrect Florida title
Tip: To donate a failed-emissions car, we still need correct ownership paperwork. If the title is lost, damaged, or in a previous name, contact the Florida DHSMV or your local tax collector’s office in Orange, Seminole, or Osceola County before pickup so we can transfer title cleanly.
Active loan or lien on the vehicle
Tip: If your car still has a lien listed, we generally can’t complete donation until it’s released. Check your title for any lienholder. If one is listed, contact the lender to get a lien satisfaction and updated title before scheduling pickup, so the charity can take clear ownership.
Car stored at a shop after failing smog
Tip: If your vehicle is sitting at a mechanic in Orlando, Kissimmee, or Apopka after failing emissions, let the shop know you’re donating. Make sure the vehicle is accessible during towing hours and any storage or repair bills are settled, since towing companies can’t pay your outstanding charges.
Out-of-date registration or expired tag
Tip: An expired tag or registration doesn’t block donation, but be honest about its status. Since this is a charitable title transfer, not a private sale, current registration is usually not required. Just don’t drive the car on public roads; let us tow it to avoid tickets or penalties.
