For a Florida vehicle donation, the license plate belongs to you, not the donated vehicle. Remove the plate before the tow. After pickup, either transfer the plate to your next vehicle through the Florida DMV or tax collector process, or surrender it if you will not use it.
Keep the surrender receipt. It is your proof for cancelling the registration and may be needed before penalty-free insurance cancellation. Also complete your notice of transfer/release of liability.
What to do with your plates
Confirm the Florida plate rule
Florida follows the common rule: the plate stays with the donor, not the vehicle. Before tow day, confirm the current process with the Florida DMV or your county tax collector if your situation is unusual. Examples include a leased vehicle, a specialty plate, a recently moved household, or a plate that is already expired.
Remove plates before the tow
Take the license plate off before the vehicle leaves your driveway, parking lot, or repair shop. Do this before you hand over the keys or final paperwork. Keep the screws and plate frame if you want them. Do not leave the plate in the glove box, trunk, or on the seat, because it can be missed later.
Surrender or transfer the plate
After the donation pickup, choose one path. If you are putting the plate on another vehicle, follow the Florida DMV or tax collector transfer process. If you are not using the plate again, surrender it through the required Florida channel. Do not simply throw it away unless the Florida DMV tells you that is acceptable for your exact case.
Save the surrender receipt
Ask for and keep the surrender receipt or confirmation. This receipt is your proof that the plate was surrendered and the registration can be cancelled. It is also sometimes a prerequisite to cancel insurance without a penalty. Keep it with your donation receipt, title copy, and any tow or pickup paperwork.
File the transfer notice

If the plate already left
If your donated vehicle already left with the plate attached, do not assume it is harmless. Contact Orlando Auto Ally and ask whether the plate can be recovered. Then contact the Florida DMV or your county tax collector and explain that the donated vehicle was towed before the plate was removed. Ask what they need from you to protect the registration record. In the Orlando Metro, many donors handle plate questions through a local tax collector office, but you should follow the current Florida instructions for your exact record.
